Nutrition for senior dogs
For the senior dog, there is no separate nutritional requirement compared to an adult dog. So as long as your middle-aged dog is healthy and full of life, switching to a ‘senior’ food is not necessary. In addition, there is quite some difference in the composition of senior foods. Some foods contain extra protein with the claim that the food compensates for loss of muscle mass, while others contain less protein with the claim that it relieves the kidneys. So switching to a senior food because a dog has passed a certain age is not necessary as long as the dog is healthy. Age is not a disease.
Age-related complaints
If your dog starts showing signs of old age, such as stiffness, behavioural changes, drinking or urinating more, changes in coat or reduced appetite, it is wise to contact your vet.
