Do Potatoes Cause Blood Sugar Fluctuations?

The rate at which starch from cooked potatoes is released (known as the glycemic index) is comparable to that of cooked white rice. So, this is not a reason to avoid potatoes as a safe energy source for sensitive dogs.

Potato Protein: A High-Quality Protein Source

Potato protein is a highly digestible and pure protein source with an amino acid profile that meets the needs of both dogs and cats. Since Energique meals are designed to be suitable for puppies, kittens, and pregnant or nursing dogs and cats, ensuring adequate protein is essential.

You might be surprised to learn that sedentary cats (inactive indoor cats) have the highest protein requirement per unit of energy. These cats, common in Western Europe, are prone to obesity and have relatively low energy needs, making them vulnerable to protein deficiencies. Most raw meat products do not provide enough protein on an energy basis to meet their needs.

When formulating our meals, we focus not just on protein percentage but also on the amino acid profile to detect deficiencies and adjust our recipes accordingly. Since meat is not as concentrated in protein as potato protein and also contains moisture and fat, we include a small amount of high-quality potato protein to enhance our recipes. The potato protein we use is of high quality with a guaranteed composition.

On internet forums, it's often mentioned that dogs and cats naturally don't eat vegetables and fruits, and therefore wouldn't need these ingredients in their diet. Some even claim that they can't properly digest the nutrients in vegetables and fruits, labeling them as useless fillers that don't contribute to the animal's health. These kinds of remarks are incorrect for several reasons.

Firstly, plant-based materials contain many minerals, vitamins, and fibers that are essential for a healthy functioning body. Think of nutrients like Vitamin C and E, manganese, and natural antioxidants, which are primarily found in plant materials. The naturally occurring fibers in vegetables and fruits are important for healthy digestion and preventing constipation. In the wild, our dogs' and cats' relatives obtain these nutrients and fibers by consuming their prey whole, including the contents of the prey's digestive system.

Of course, raw vegetables are difficult for dogs and cats to digest. This is also true for humans, which is why we cook, stir-fry, or steam our vegetables before eating them. At Energique, we deliberately choose to include vegetables and fruits in our meals to create as versatile a diet as possible for your dog. All the vegetables we add to our meals are of human-grade quality and are steamed before being added, ensuring that your dog can properly utilize them.

For our cat meals, we add plant fibers to support healthy digestion. While the main ingredient in our foods is raw meat, you will also find vegetables, fruits, and/or fiber sources in all our products to meet all of your pet's needs.

Endive is a leafy vegetable from the composite family, closely related to chicory. It's considered a fiber-rich vegetable and is high in vitamins A, K, and folic acid, as well as the minerals calcium, potassium, and manganese. Additionally, endive contains a varied amount of polyphenols. These are compounds with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to this rich variety of polyphenols, endive is considered a "superfood" from our own soil.

We know apples as a fruit with a deliciously fresh and sweet taste, making it a great healthy snack. Because of its flavor, one might assume that it is primarily a carbohydrate-rich fruit. However, not many people know that apples also contain a lot of fiber and are rich in the prebiotic fiber pectin, making them excellent for digestive health. Apples also contain some unique polyphenols, which are linked to improved health in humans. A recent study in the British Journal of Nutrition among older adults showed that regular apple consumption (about 100g per day) was associated with a 35% lower risk of early death from cancer or cardiovascular disease (Br J Nutr. 2016;115(5):860-7). This gives the saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" a whole new meaning.

Beet pulp is an ingredient that results from processing sugar beets into sugar. This product is rich in fiber and also contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron. Beet pulp has a varied fiber profile, including both insoluble and soluble fibers.

What’s the difference?

Insoluble fibers help stimulate bowel movement, while soluble fibers serve as food for gut bacteria, also known as prebiotic fibers. Both types of fiber are necessary for healthy bowel function, and both are present in beet pulp. There are many unfounded myths about beet pulp on the internet. However, scientific studies show that adding this ingredient to the diet actually benefits bowel function. Research is increasingly uncovering the importance of dietary fibers in preventing bowel diseases and maintaining gut health in both humans and animals. Prebiotic fibers play a crucial role in this, and beet pulp is an excellent source of them! Many raw meat products lack fiber ingredients, resulting in low fiber content, which can lead to hard stools and sometimes even constipation. Constipation can be particularly dangerous for sensitive or older animals. That’s why all Energique foods include a suitable source of fiber.

If there's a superfood growing in our Dutch soil, it's broccoli. Broccoli, like cauliflower, is technically a flower rather than a vegetable, a fun fact that many people might not know. What makes "good old" broccoli so unique? Broccoli is packed with substances that our bodies and intestines need. It is a fiber-rich vegetable with both soluble and insoluble fibers. Additionally, it contains a range of natural antioxidants, with sulforaphane being the most significant metabolite. This compound is associated with anti-cancer effects, lowering cholesterol, combating aging, reducing cardiovascular diseases, and preventing arthritis. Moreover, broccoli is rich in proteins, minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and iron, and vitamins C, E, and K. For our pets, broccoli can also be a valuable dietary addition. However, as with all good things, there are potential downsides. Excessive amounts of this “vegetable” may lead to gastrointestinal issues due to its fiber content and isothiocyanates. Scientists indicate that up to 10% of the daily amount in the form of broccoli is safe. The levels used in our meals are far below this amount.

Both types of fiber are essential for healthy gut function, and both are present in chicory pulp. Research increasingly highlights the importance of dietary fibers in preventing gut diseases and maintaining gut health in both humans and animals. Prebiotic fibers play a crucial role, and chicory pulp is an excellent source of these! Fats and fatty acids play a crucial role in the bodies of dogs and cats, both as a source of energy and as building blocks. While many of these fatty acids can be synthesized by the body, some cannot. These essential fatty acids must be provided through the diet. A deficiency in essential fatty acids can lead to poor coat and skin condition. Since animal sources may not always provide sufficient essential fatty acids, we add refined plant oils to our meals to ensure they contain adequate essential fats. We use high-quality oils derived from canola, sunflower, and flaxseed. Many internet forums claim that dogs and cats cannot properly digest plant oils. This is absolutely incorrect; scientific sources show that plant fats have comparable digestibility to animal fats.

Canola oil is a valuable source of both polyunsaturated omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, with a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 of 2:1. This is the same ratio found in the natural diet of dogs and cats. Additionally, canola is naturally rich in vitamin E, one of the most important antioxidants in the bodies of both species. Moreover, canola is grown right here in our own Dutch soil and does not need to be imported from distant places.

Potassium is an essential nutrient for both dogs and cats. A deficiency in potassium can lead to loss of appetite, lethargy, and overall malaise. Cats, in particular, are sensitive to potassium levels and have a relatively high requirement for this mineral. Dogs with gastrointestinal issues may also need additional potassium. Fresh meat naturally contains relatively low amounts of potassium. Therefore, in our recipes that do not provide sufficient potassium on their own, we have added potassium chloride to ensure that your pet always receives an adequate amount of this important mineral.

Adding a small amount of grains to some of our meals is a deliberate choice. Grains are a natural source of fiber, such as beta-glucans, which support healthy digestive function. These fibers are also important for promoting normal bowel movements. Additionally, grains naturally contain important vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin E, manganese, and magnesium, and serve as a significant energy source. For animals engaged in physical activity (such as working dogs), glucose from grain starch helps maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the day. Energique uses highly digestible grains of superior quality. Given the cost of our grains, they are certainly not added as “cheap fillers.” The notion that dogs cannot digest carbohydrates because they are not part of their natural diet is a myth. For example, dog milk contains a significant amount of sugars and serves as an important energy source for the puppy.

The idea that grains make dogs gain weight more quickly is also incorrect. It is important to recognize that, like us, dogs gain weight from consuming too much food, particularly excessive snacks or extras.

Corn is often viewed as a cheap filler, but this is far from the truth. Corn is a highly digestible carbohydrate source for dogs, providing energy (Carciofi et al., J. Anim Phys Anim Nutr. 2008;92:326-336). Contrary to popular belief, the glycemic and insulin responses of corn-based diets for dogs are comparable to those of grain-free diets (Rankovic et al., J Anim Sci. 2020; 98(8); 1-11). Corn is also an excellent source of essential fatty acids compared to other carbohydrate sources and is naturally rich in antioxidants such as beta-carotene, Vitamin E, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Furthermore, corn contains about 15% protein based on dry matter, with a relatively high amount of sulfur-containing amino acids, which are important for maintaining a healthy skin and coat. Corn is also rich in essential minerals such as manganese and magnesium and contains relatively high levels of B vitamins, such as pyridoxine, thiamine, and niacin. Far from being a mere filler!

Sodium is an essential nutrient for both dogs and cats. A deficiency in sodium can lead to muscle weakness, confusion, and lethargy. Fresh meat naturally contains relatively low amounts of sodium, and in some cases, the base formula might not provide enough sodium to meet your pet's needs. In such cases, we add a small amount of salt (sodium chloride) to the recipe to ensure that your pet receives adequate amounts of this important mineral.

Spinach needs no introduction for most people, thanks to Popeye's famous strength boost from it! Spinach is rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, and potassium, as well as vitamins C, E, and K. It also contains high levels of protein and fiber. However, like beetroot, the real health benefit of spinach lies in its high levels of betaine and trimethylglycine, both of which are methyl donors with important roles in metabolism (as mentioned with beetroot). Spinach also contains a significant amount of oxalates, but, similar to beetroot, the actual intestinal absorption of oxalates is low due to the high mineral content in spinach.

Wheat Gluten

There is no scientific reason to believe that dogs cannot tolerate gluten. Gluten is a protein that is digestible, even for dogs. There are very specific cases with particular dog breeds where genetic sensitivity to gluten has been identified, such as gluten-sensitive enteropathy in Irish Setters (a form of celiac disease) and canine epileptoid cramping syndrome (CECS) in Border Terriers. In Jack Russells, genetic mutations causing CECS have been identified in England. However, it is a common misconception that dogs, in general, cannot tolerate gluten.

Vetten en vetzuren spelen een belangrijke rol in het lichaam van de hond en kat, zowel als bron van energie, maar ook als bouwstof. Veel van deze vetzuren kan het lichaam zelf maken, maar niet allemaal. De vetzuren die het lichaam niet zelf kan maken, de zogenaamde essentiële vetzuren, dienen voldoende in onze voeding te zitten. Een tekort aan essentiele vetzuren kan onder andere leiden tot een slechte conditie van de vacht en huid. De vetten in zalm- en visolie zijn daarbij van belang als bron van de essentiële omega-3 vetzuren EPA en DHA. Deze specifieke vetzuren zijn onder andere van belang voor een goede ontwikkeling van de hersenen, de visus, en het functioneren van het hart. Daarnaast spelen EPA en DHA een belangrijke rol in het immuunsysteem. Ze hebben een ontstekingsremmende werking in geval van chronische ontstekingen en allergieën. Volwassen honden kunnen EPA en DHA in principe in voldoende hoeveelheid maken vanuit het plantaardige vetzuur alfa-linoleenzuur, maar voor katten moet het extra aan de voeding worden toegevoegd. Vandaar dat wij aan onze voedingen een bron van EPA en DHA toevoegen. Voor de Energique maaltijden gebruiken wij hiervoor zalmolie, en voor de Energique Puur Eend en de RAW dieetvoedingen voor dieren met een chronische aandoeningen gebruiken we hiervoor een zeer zuivere visolie, die extra hoge hoeveelheden EPA en DHA bevat.

Er bestaat bij sommige  eigenaren de filosofie dat het toevoegen van vitaminen en mineralen niet nodig is of zelfs onwenselijk. Een wolf of leeuw in de natuur krijgt ook geen extra vitaminen en mineralen is dan meestal het argument. Maar, onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat dieren in de natuur op grote schaal kampen met deficiënties (tekorten) aan voedingsstoffen. Dat is een van de redenen dat ze een stuk minder oud worden dan onze huisdieren. Er zijn helaas ook veel voorbeelden van honden en katten met chronische voedingsstoffentekorten door langdurig nuttigen van een incomplete rauwe voeding.  Wil je dus een dier op lange termijn gezond houden op één specifieke voeding dan zal deze voeding aanvullende vitaminen en mineralen moeten bevatten. De vitaminen en mineralen die Energique toevoegt worden helemaal op maat voor onze producten samengesteld.

Wij kiezen er heel bewust voor om niet mee te waaien met de hype dat vitaminen- en mineralen toevoegingen “niet natuurlijk” zijn.
Wij maken complete maaltijden waarvoor wij garant kunnen staan. Maaltijden die ook bij langdurig gebruik van het product in alle behoeften van het dier voorzien.

Sommige eigenaren geloven dat een vitaminen en mineralen synthetisch zijn. Ook dit is onjuist. Immers je kunt ijzer, koper, mangaan of zink niet “maken” in een laboratorium. Het zijn elementen uit het periodiek systeem. Wat vitaminen betreft: die worden gewonnen uit natuurlijk bronnen zoals gisten, schimmels of door bacteriën geproduceerd. Het zijn geen “in het laboratorium gefabriceerde chemische stoffen”.

De conservering van de Energique / RAW maaltijden vindt plaats door onze maaltijden in te vriezen, en de vitaminen (bijvoorbeeld vitamine D en vitamine E) worden dus alleen toegevoegd om in de behoefte van het dier te voorzien.

Jarenlange ervaring in het produceren van hoogwaardige honden- en kattenvoedingen heeft ons geleerd dat er altijd voedingsstoffen zijn die niet in optimale gehalten of zelfs in tekorten in de grondstoffen voorkomen. Daarom laten wij onze maaltijden analyseren op nutriënten in onafhankelijke geaccrediteerde laboratoria.

Hierbij gaat het met name om voedingsstoffen zoals vitaminen en mineralen die niet wijdverbreid in vlees voorkomen. Deze vitaminen en mineralen voegen we dan toe aan de maaltijden, zodat de hond of kat aan onze producten een volwaardige maaltijd heeft. Elke dag weer!

Lopen mensen dan ook het risico op tekorten? Jazeker! Onze kinderen krijgen extra vitamine D druppels omdat de ervaring heeft geleerd dat er anders tekorten ontstaan die de botgroei van kinderen nadelig beïnvloedt. Aan ons brood wordt jodiumhoudend zout toegevoegd, zodat wij geen jodiumgebrek ontwikkelen. Onze margarine wordt verrijkt met vitamine A en D, zodat wij deze stoffen als volwassenen in voldoende mate binnenkrijgen.

Aan alle maaltijden van Energique worden passende vitaminen en mineralen toegevoegd.

Op internetfora wordt vaak vermeld dat honden en katten van nature geen groenten en fruit eten, en dus geen behoefte zouden hebben aan deze ingrediënten in hun voeding. Soms wordt zelfs beweerd dat ze de voedingsstoffen in groenten en fruit niet goed zouden kunnen verteren. Het zouden loze vulmiddelen zijn die niet bijdragen aan de gezondheid van het dier. Dit soort opmerkingen op internet zijn om meerdere redenen niet correct. Als eerste bevatten plantaardige materialen vele mineralen, vitaminen en vezels, die van belang zijn voor een gezond functionerend lichaam. Denk hierbij aan voedingsstoffen zoals Vitamine C en E, mangaan en natuurlijke anti-oxidanten, die met name in plantaardig materiaal voorkomen. De natuurlijk voorkomende vezels in groenten en fruit zijn van belang voor een gezonde darmwerking, en het voorkomen van verstoppingen. De wilde familieleden van onze kat en hond krijgen deze voedingsstoffen en -vezels in de natuur binnen doordat zij hun prooien met huid en haar verslinden, en zich dan ook tegoed doen aan inhoud die nog aanwezig is in het maag-darmkanaal.

Natuurlijk is het wel zo dat rauwe groenten slecht verteerbaar zijn voor honden en katten. Dat is voor mensen niet anders, en dan ook de reden dat wij onze groenten koken/wokken/stomen alvorens wij ze nuttigen. Bij Energique kiezen wij er bewust voor groenten en fruit toe te voegen, om en zo veelzijdig mogelijke voeding voor je hond te creëren. Alle groenten die wij aan onze maaltijden toevoegen zijn van humane kwaliteit, en worden gestoomd voordat ze worden toegevoegd aan de maaltijd, zodat de hond ze goed kan benutten.
Aan onze kattenmaaltijden voegen we plantaardige vezels toe ter ondersteuning van  een gezonde darmwerking. Het hoofdbestanddeel van onze voedingen is rauw vlees, maar je zult in al onze producten zeker ook groenten, fruit en /of vezelbronnen aantreffen, om in alle behoeften van het dier te voorzien.

Wortel is een heel veelzijdige groente, lekker bij vele gerechten, neutraal en zoetig van smaak, al goed te verdragen door baby’s (die vaak als eerste vaste voeding een wortelhapje krijgen), en ook populair als gezonde borrelsnack. Maar wortel heeft ook vele gezondheidsvoordelen die niet zo heel bekend zijn. Zijn oranje kleur dankt de wortel aan beta-caroteen, een voorloperstof van vitamine A. Beta-caroteen kennen de meeste mensen als stofje dat in wortel zit en goed is voor de oogfunctie, maar datzelfde beta-caroteen heeft ook een belangrijke functie als antioxidant in het lichaam van de hond. Daarnaast bevat wortel een aanzienlijk gehalte aan vezels en is het een bron van B-vitaminen en kalium.

De vetzuren die het lichaam niet zelf kan maken, de zogenaamde essentiële vetzuren, moeten dus voldoende in de voeding zitten. Een tekort aan essentiële vetzuren kan onder andere leiden tot een slechte conditie van de vacht en huid. De vetten in zalm- en visolie zijn daarbij van belang als bron van de essentiele omega-3 vetzuren EPA en DHA. Deze specifieke vetzuren zijn onder andere van belang voor een goede ontwikkeling van de hersenen, de visus, en het functioneren van het hart. Daarnaast spelen EPA en DHA een belangrijke rol in het immuunsysteem, en hebben een ontstekingsremmende werking in geval van chronische ontstekingen en allergieën. Volwassen honden kunnen EPA en DHA in principe in voldoende hoeveelheid maken vanuit het plantaardige vetzuur alfa-linoleenzuur, maar voor katten moet het extra aan de voeding worden toegevoegd. Vandaar dat wij aan al onze voedingen een bron van EPA en DHA toevoegen. Voor de Energique maaltijden gebruiken wij hiervoor zalmolie, en voor Energique Puur Eend en de RAW dieetvoedingen voor dieren met een chronische aandoeningen gebruiken we hiervoor een zeer zuivere visolie, die extra hoge hoeveelheden EPA en DHA bevat.

Zalmolie is verwerkt in de maaltijden Energique Volwassen Hond, Energique voor Puppy’s, Energique Werkhond, Energique Special, Energique HondVitaal, Energique Kat Kalkoen Kabeljauw, Energique Kat Rund Lam, Energique Kat Kip Parelhoen.

Vetten en vetzuren spelen een belangrijke rol in het lichaam van de hond en kat, zowel als bron van energie, maar ook als bouwstof. Veel van deze vetzuren kan het lichaam zelf maken, maar niet allemaal. De vetzuren die het lichaam niet zelf kan maken, de zogenaamde essentiële vetzuren, moeten dus voldoende in de voeding zitten. Een tekort aan essentiële vetzuren kan onder andere leiden tot een slechte conditie van de vacht en huid. Omdat dierlijk materiaal niet altijd voldoende van deze essentiële vetzuren bevat, voegen wij gezuiverde plantaardige oliën toe aan onze maaltijden, zodat deze altijd voldoende essentiële vetten bevatten. Hiervoor gebruiken we hoogwaardige oliën gewonnen vanuit koolzaad, zonnebloemzaad en lijnzaad. Op veel internetfora wordt beweerd dat honden en katten plantaardige oliën niet goed zouden kunnen verteren. Dit is absolute onzin, wetenschappelijke bronnen laten zien dat plantaardige vetten een vergelijkbare verteerbaarheid kennen ten opzichte van dierlijke vetten.

Sommige internetfora beweren zelfs dat zonnebloemolie slecht zou zijn voor honden en katten. Gelukkig is deze mening niet gebaseerd op enig wetenschappelijk bewijs.

Linolzuur is een essentieel vetzuur. Honden kunnen het niet zelf produceren en moeten daarom altijd linolzuur uit hun voedsel halen.

Zonnebloemolie is zeer rijk aan dit vetzuur (>50% van de olie bestaat uit linolzuur), zodat slechts een kleine hoeveelheid per dag nodig is om in de behoefte van de hond in dit essentiële vetzuur te voorzien.

Energique gebruikt zonnebloemolie van hoge humane kwaliteit die zeer stabiel is. Bovendien is zonnebloemolie een goede bron van natuurlijke vitamine E.
